Is Calderon Interstate the solution?
In 2014,
the municipal government of Quito started the construction of Calderon
interstate (El Comercio, 2015) , in order to find a
solution for traffic. Since
these year traffic was
worst; because of traffic changes in Panamericana and Simon Bolivar highways (El Comercio, 2016) . The big problem was misinformation about
route changes and vial closures (El Comercio, 2016) ; in addition of cars’ density. 250,000
people live in Calderon and 50,000
more come only for work (El Comercio, 2016) ;
so there are 250 000 people trying to pass every day in pick hours (La hora, 2011) . But;
why those people didn´t use public buses?
There are more than 12 lines
only for Carapungo and Calderon (Agencia pública de noticias de Quito, 2010) . The answer is
simple, deficient public transport (Agencia pública de noticias, 2013). Despite the fact that there are a lot of bus lines,
the service is bad, disorganized and sometimes dangerous. It force people to
use particular cars and produces the whole traffic problems; because Quito’s
particular fleet grows 11% per year (El Telégrafo, 2013) .
Being this the real problem, mega constructions like
Calderon interstate are only small solutions in regard to mobility problems.
Obviously; the
interstate will improve traffic problems (El Comercio, 2016) , but it’s important to improve public
transportation too. Otherwise, particular fleet will continue growing on the
same referred percentage and car traffic will fill again interstate roads.
Now, the vehicular load at Carapungo has 60,000 cars
per day (El Comercio, 2016) , if it doubles the quantity, it would
be 120,000 cars and the problem will be the same in a few years.
Because of
this, it’s important that municipal government controls public bus lines and
improve their services. Furthermore, Quito needs new solutions with low
environmental impact, such electric buses and bikeways which give preference to
pedestrians and public system users.
With an appropriate upgrade of transport and traffic,
the whole city would improve its transportation time; without making more roads
and flyovers.
